We all know how our financial health can impact our mental and physical health, which is why we asked psychologist Dr Bec Jackson for her practical tips and advice for regaining control and caring for your mental health. From acknowledging your emotions to seeking help, Dr Jackson goes through it all and even offers tips on how to talk to your kids and reassure them during times when finances are tight.
Dr Jackson advises that you should take simple steps to reduce unnecessary spending to help you feel more in control of your finances, including:
- Monitor what you are currently spending
- Check out any direct debits you have
- Set a realistic budget for family living costs
- You still need to have fun, so investigate free entertainment in your local area.

We know how much mums stress over the family’s grocery budget, and trying to juggle healthy food choices with fussy eaters or family allergies can be difficult. This is why we took on the challenge of comparing how each of the major supermarkets in Australia stacked up when it came to some of our family-friendly favourite recipes to help mums like you. We cooked up our Mexican Lasagne, Pumpkin and Feta Tart, Peanut Butter Chicken, Chocolate Chip Chickpea Cookies and Snickers Mouse with ingredients bought from Coles, Woolies and Aldi to see which one did it cheaper and help you decide where to shop.
We’ve also got top tips to help you get the most out of your food and avoid food waste, including buying veggies frozen, watching your portion sizes and meal planning to manage the budget better. And when it comes to meal planning, we asked a couple of mums how they plan and prep their meals for their family and how it has helped save them over $100 a week in their weekly grocery budget.

Crowd-Pleasing Cob Loaf
Serves: 12
Prep time: 5 mins
Cook time: 20 mins
Ingredients:
- 1 cob bread loaf
- 1 cup extra light sour cream
- 1 cup light cream cheese
- 1 sachet onion soup mix
- 3 cups reduced-fat cheddar cheese, grated
- 2½ cups frozen spinach, thawed
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
- Prepare the cob loaf by placing it on the lined tray before cutting out the centre of the bread.
- Break up the bread from the middle of the loaf and place it around the lined tray in an even layer.
- In a large bowl, combine sour cream, cream cheese, soup mix, cheese and spinach.
- Pour into the centre of the prepared loaf and bake in the oven for 20 minutes.
- Serve your cob loaf with the toasted bread pieces.
